Foundation Stage

The Early Years Foundation Stage: Nursery and Reception

The time spent in the Foundation Stage is preliminary to the National Curriculum, serving as a foundation to future learning.

Play is carefully structured and planned for to ensure that whilst the children see it as fun their learning is maximised – particularly building on their own interests and experiences.  A wide range of activities are organised both indoors and outdoors and they will be gaining all the basic skills they need to be prepared for Year 1.

The Foundation Stage is based around 3 prime areas, and 4 specific areas of learning:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design
