Another busy week in Reception, we hope you have a lovely half term!

Maths -

This week, we have consolidated our understanding of the composition of numbers by investigating the numbers within 7. Composing and de-composing numbers involves the children investigating part–part–whole relations, e.g. seeing that 7 can be made of 5 and 2. The children have deepened their understanding of a whole being made up of smaller parts through games and practical experiences, such as investigating the number of ducks on a pond. We are recognising that numbers can be made by combining parts in different ways, making links by considering similarities and differences in the various ways of making 7. A key focus has been partitioning 7 (splitting it into parts) and thinking about the missing part.

Maths activities at home to try -

Ask your child to use interlocking cubes/squares of card in 2 different colours to build towers of 7. How many ways can you build a tower of 7? What do you notice?

Build a tower of 7 interlocking cubes. Let’s check that there are 7! I’m going to hide them behind my back and snap some off! Show the children the cubes that have been snapped off. What have I got left behind my back? How do you know?

Topic -

We have finished this half term by drawing ourselves as superheroes! After reading the story Superbat, we discussed how the characters were making Superbat feel throughout the story. We also looked at the differences between fiction and non-fiction; real abilities (being kind, helpful and brave) vs superhero abilities (flying, having x-ray vision). We designed our own capes and wrote a sentence about our abilities.

ELGs-

Maths

Number:

Have a deep understanding of numbers to 10, including the composition of each number.

Subitise (recognise quantities without counting) up to 5.

Automatically recall (without reference to rhymes, counting or other aids) number bonds up to 5 (including subtraction facts) and some number bonds to 10, including double facts.

Numerical Patterns:

Verbally count beyond 20, recognising the pattern of the counting system.

Compare quantities up to 10 in different contexts, recognising when one quantity is greater than, less than or the same as the other quantity.

Explore and represent patterns within numbers up to 10, including evens and odds, double facts and how quantities can be distributed equally.
