English
We have been enjoying the story We’re Going to Find a Monster by Malorie Blackman. The children created their own amazing monsters, labelling them with exciting adjectives—there were some fantastic and adventurous ideas!
They then wrote sentences about their monsters, using ‘and’, question marks, and exclamation marks. These are skills we are working hard to master by the end of Year 1.
At the end of the week, we created a brand-new character to help us plan and write our own version of the story next week. We are very excited!
Maths
This week we have been learning about position and direction, including left and right, forwards and backwards, and above and below.
We also explored ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.), ordering objects and finding the correct position. The children loved our practical activities, including treasure maps, moving characters, and building cube towers.
Everyone has been so engaged, well done! Next week we will return to place value, working with numbers all the way up to 100.
Phonics
This week we have been revising familiar sounds and practising the different ways we can spell them.
The children have been brilliant at “growing the code,” showing their knowledge of different graphemes for the same sound and making great choices in their spelling.
Topic Learning
Science
We learned about mammals and the three things they need:
- Hair or fur
- Drink milk from their mother
- Are born (not hatched from eggs)
The children shared excellent knowledge and drew and discussed lots of animals.
History
We explored the history of trains, learning about steam, diesel, and electric trains. The children wrote sentences explaining how trains have improved over time.
Reminders
- Next week will be hot, so please bring a water bottle, sun hat, and come with sun cream already applied.
- Children may wear PE kit if this is more comfortable in the heat.
Please can we kindly ask that children do not bring colouring-in pictures from home to give out to friends. It is not fair when these are handed out between friends, and not available to all.
