Announcements
PE Day: Thursday- Please can children come to school in their PE kit on this day.
Forest School: Tuesday- Please bring wellies and waterproofs if you haven’t already. Children will also need these for OPAL playtimes as we are an all‑weather school. A spare pair of socks is always helpful.
Library Day: Wednesday- Please bring back old books on this day so we can issue new ones.
Reading books: Children will receive their new book every Friday. Please see the letter about reading that was sent by the office earlier in the week.
We have had a fantastic first week in Year 2! The children have settled quickly into their new routines and have already shown how ready they are for the year ahead. They quickly found their table spaces and drawers and have been working together sensibly throughout the week. As a class, we spent time thinking about what helps us learn well. The children helped to create our class rules, showing that we are a team who tidy resources, listen to others and help each other!
English
In English, we began our new book Frog and the Stranger by Max Velthuijs. The children enjoyed listening to the story and role‑playing Rat, Frog and Pig in small groups. We used our inference skills to explore Rat’s feelings. Some of the words the children suggested included worried, unsure, relaxed, thoughtful, calm and brave. They also worked with a partner to match cut‑up sentences from the story and write about different parts of the story.
Maths
In Maths, we focused on place value. The children have practised counting objects to 100 by making groups of ten, and identifying tens and ones using a place value chart. We have also been practicing writing numbers in numerals and words to 100. Children have also enjoyed their new Maths Fluency sessions which includes using their maths reasoning and quick recall of number facts.
Topic
In Art, we explored abstract art and looked at artists who use shape, line and colour in their work. We listened to music while drawing zig- zags, swirls, dots, shapes which represented our feelings about the piece of music. We reminded the children that there is no right or wrong way to do this and that they can express how the music makes them feel in any way. The children then added vibrant paint colours to their shapes.
In Science, we learned that all animals grow and change over time. We talked about how different animals have different life cycles, and how humans also grow and change as they get older. We looked closely at the butterfly life cycle and made our own butterfly spinner to show each stage. We are excited to be soon growing our own butterflies in class and observing the different stages and changes!
