We have had another busy week in Year 2! This week the children have had their first full Forest School session. Hannah introduced the children to 'Grandmother Oak Tree', who they greeted individually with either a hug or a Hi5. We enjoyed 'nature's orchestra' by spending 60 seconds carefully listening to the sounds around us. It was lovely to see the children climbing the slack line, making kites and spending time by the 'listening logs'.
English
In English, we learnt about how helpful the character of Rat was in the story 'Frog and the Stranger'. We talked to our partner about how Rat built Pig a new home and saved the Hare from drowning. We then planned our own 'Helpful Rat' stories. We had a go at choosing our own main character and thinking of a problem that Rat could solve. The children have written their first drafts of their stories and next week they will edit and publish them. We are excited to build up a bank of class published books throughout Year 2 that the children can access in the reading areas!
Maths
In Maths, we have looked at partitioning numbers to 100 in different ways. We know we need to count the groups of tens and add the ones carefully. We are working hard to practise writing numbers as words as this is one of our goals for the end of Year 2. Children are enjoying oral counting of 2s, 5s and 10s in Maths Fluency. We are also counting from different starting points, counting backwards and forwards and solving missing number sequences.
Topic
In Personal Development and Wellbeing lessons, we looked at what the word 'democracy' means. Children have put themselves forward if they would like to be a Library Leader and filled out applications if they would like to be a Playleader. We learnt about what it means to be part of Eco- council and how important looking after our planet is. Children who wanted this role said a few words to the class about why they would be good at this role and then the class voted. Well done to all the children for being so brave in saying their speeches and to the children chosen by vote to represent the class.
In Computing, we had fun exploring the 'Sphero indi robots' which is a small programmable robot car. The children had a go at designing a sequence which programmed the robot to go in different directions. Working in a team was super important for this task and making sure everyone had a turn to either program the robot or change the robot's direction.
In Art, we enjoyed mixing tints and shades to either lighten or darken primary and secondary colours. The children mixed white paint to lighten and black paint to create darker shades. We looked at the different colour shades on a colour wheel and thought of our own names for shades such as 'apple red', 'spring green' or 'sunshine yellow'.
A wonderful week, Year 2. Keep it up!
