Another lovely week with fantastic learning in Reception - we are half way through writing our 3rd book in English and this term, we are writing animal stories. The children are becoming excellent authors and illustrators and it's amazing to watch their imaginations develop page after page.

Phonics -

Graphemes - oo (moon), oo (book), ar, or.

Tricky words - was, you, they.

Independent whiteboard writing - moon, book, dark, born.

Maths -

Our focus this week has been comparison. When comparing, the children are being encouraged to notice attributes and understand the differences and similarities between them. Our activities this week have focussed on further developing this innate skill as the children have been encouraged to focus exclusively on ordinality: considering where numbers to 8 are in relation to each other.

Language is a key focus and the language of ‘more than’, ‘less than’ and ‘equal to’ has been used explicitly to describe the relationships between numbers. This week, ‘less than’ is used instead of ‘fewer than’ when the focus is on each number’s position in the counting sequence.

Topic -

Art - we have loved reading the story Supertato this week, linking our topic of people who help us to superheroes. We have made wanted posters for the Evil Pea and potato printed in the tuff tray.

ELGs -

Literacy -

Comprehension:

Demonstrate understanding of what has been read to them by retelling stories and narratives using their own words and recently introduced vocabulary.

Anticipate – where appropriate – key events in stories.

Use and understand recently introduced vocabulary during discussions about stories, non-fiction, rhymes and poems and during role-play.

Word Reading:

Say a sound for each letter in the alphabet and at least 10 digraphs.

Read words consistent with their phonic knowledge by sound-blending.

Read aloud simple sentences and books that are consistent with their phonic knowledge, including some common exception words.

Writing:

Write recognisable letters, most of which are correctly formed.

Spell words by identifying sounds in them and representing the sounds with a letter or letters.

Write simple phrases and sentences that can be read by others.

As always, we are accepting small cardboard boxes and tubes for our junk modelling area. Have a lovely weekend!
