This week, the children have build on their subitising skills. We have continued to use ‘perceptual’ subitising – instant recognition – by saying the number of sounds that we can hear, such as claps or drum beats, without needing to count. The children have been encouraged to look closely at small quantities and observe whether the quantity has changed or only the arrangement.
When investigating the shapes made by Numberblock Four and making similar arrangements, the children are also beginning to develop their skills of ‘conceptual’ subitising. They will begin to notice the sub-groups that can be perceived within a larger set, and recognise the whole at the same time. For example, they will see that Numberblock Four can be arranged with 2 blocks on top of another 2 blocks or as a line of 3 with 1 on top, and connect both to 4. This is further developing their understanding of part–whole relations and the composition of number from Week 3.
The children are also being encouraged to represent quantities in different ways by using a number of fingers on one hand. We ask the children to 'grow their fingers' - putting up one finger at a time before showing them. We will then gradually introduce the idea of making an amount 'all at once'.
Topic -
We loved reading The Smeds and The Smoos this week, and used the story to introduce and explore colour mixing. We learnt about primary and secondary colours, and watched as the primary colours transformed into new colours when mixed. The children had the opportunity to create their own planets through mixing primary colours together, and we had a great time talking about what our planets would look like, plus who would live there.

Please ensure phonics books are brought into school every Friday in their plastic wallet. A new phonics book cannot be sent out until the original is returned.
We are excited to visit the cinema in November! If you would like to volunteer for the morning, please speak to Miss Bartle or Mrs McGill before the end of term - we expect to be back in school by 12:30, you would have a group of 5 children.
Tapestry logins have now been sent out - we really appreciate your patience as there were a few technical issues, but please activate your account ASAP, as the code expires.
Have a lovely weekend!
